RESEARCH & PUBLIC SCHOLARSHIP
Men's Rea.
Reframing How We Understand Men and Power.
Our Purpose.
Men's Rea is the public education initiative of The Tweneboah Institute, devoted to the serious study of masculinity and power. It applies legal reasoning to help men build a practice of self-governance oriented toward purposeful living. Its name draws on the legal doctrine of mens rea, the mental state that accompanies human action, and the initiative asks how intention and awareness shape a man's understanding of himself.
Men's Rea began as a response to a well-documented crisis in modern masculinity, marked by rising isolation among men and by the scarcity of spaces where men may reflect honestly and aloud. It holds that a deeper excavation of self-understanding is fundamental to living with integrity. Structured dialogue, offered in spaces that are intellectually serious and free of judgment, is therefore essential to restoring a man's sense of purpose and expanding his agency.
The initiative unfolds through public seminars and live group office hours led by Professor Christine E. Ohenewah, a lawyer and educator who formerly worked in White Collar criminal defense and whose method joins legal principle to humanistic thought.
Men's Rea reflects the pedagogical vision of the Institute, in which education proceeds through dialogue and legal reasoning serves as a language for human understanding. Its programs center on men and remain open to anyone who wishes to examine masculinity and power with rigor and good faith. As a public education initiative, Men's Rea stands apart from the coursework of the Institute.
Active Public Engagement.

Ask Men's Rea.
Anonymous questions about dating and the modern relationship.
Ask Men's Rea is built from real anonymous questions about dating, relationships, and the opposite gender that many people hesitate to voice out loud. We therefore invite you to submit your anonymous question. And who knows? It just might shape one of our next public seminars or receive a published response from us.
Ask Men's Rea offers education and perspective and is not counseling or
legal advice. If you are in danger or experiencing abuse, please contact the
National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.

Premeditated Compliments.
Small acts of kindness, written by hand.
In an effort to reduce male loneliness and resignation, our Men's Rea initiative is setting out to provide specially handwritten compliments to men everywhere. Here, we ask nothing in return––only a smile. Because our belief is simple: Spreading small acts of uplift is a necessary part of our mission to reframe how we understand men and power. Hence, if someone walks away having a better day because of us, then we have won.

“So I feel like as men, we go through a lot. I think we should have a space for that, because day-to-day, men like me—African, Black men—have emotional struggles, too.”
